Known as the demon who chases the moon across the sky, Kala Rau is captured in natural hibiscus wood, diligently hand-carved by Made Tresna, working with local Balinese artisans. Part of a myth that explains the lunar cycles, Kala Rau is depicted with fearsome teeth and a prominent, moon-shaped forehead.

My name is Made Tresna, and I'm from Ubud, Bali. I grew up in an artistic environment - I was always in touch with many artists and artisans everyday. For as long as I can remember, I have always been fascinated with woodcarving, an art form I have been practicing since childhood. My father taught me, and he is one of senior carvers in my village.

I carved wood statuettes for some time, until I realized there were many people in my village doing the same themes. Searching for something new and different to carve, I realized I enjoyed carving masks in a more contemporary style. My favorite piece is a mask with four faces that I designed as symbol of a Balinese family. I named the mask 'Wayan, Made, Nyoman, and Ketut' - these are traditional Balinese names to refer to the first, second, third, and forth child born.

In 1989 I married Wayan Lungid and now we have two children. I work hard to make a living and also to provide my children's education.
