Story Behind the Art:-
I Nyoman Sarwaedi was born in Sukawati Gianyar Bali on April 21 1970. He is the brother of made Wirata who is a featured Novica artisan specialized in wood statuettes and husband of Made Mulyani who is also a featured Novica Artisan specialized in traditional wood masks. People know him as a humorist, simple and full responsibility man. He came from a wood carver family in Kemenuh Sukawati Gianyar Bali which people live there mostly work as wood carver. Below are his story and statements taken from short interview with him : I used to work and pay school fee by my self since I was in grade 4 of elementary school. I am a Self taught, I learned by doing observation to my parent who is a wood carver and also children that time work as wood carvers, I'm not alone, I had many kinship friends that time. I had once a very difficult moment in my life while I was in a Senior High School. That time I always very late to pay the school fee and my parents cannot help me due to their condition were underprivileged, in other hand there were no customer ordering me to do any wood carvings. I was so ashamed and being a condescending person that time due to my poverty condition. But I have to go through all of this.. what makes me to survive living in this suffer is my spirit about my own future, I want to have a happy family, growing up my children with better condition than me. Finally I graduated from the Senior High School, and married with a women who is actually still a relative of me. We have 2 children, a boy and a girl and now they study in a high School. My children should have better life then mine before, this sentence always whispering me and build my spirit. I continue my work with wood, but now more focus in making vases and classic boxes. There are 5 wood carver helping me in this work. I am interesting with lathe-things since I use lathe, and then I make the carving with chisel, hand-saw, mallet and other manual tools. I also make some different finishing to make my products looks special to my customer and these will not look so cheesy like other similar products. For material, I think Mahogany wood is the best for me now, it's easy to find and good for lathe and carving.
