Story Behind the Art:-
My name is Susi Susanti, I was born in Blitar in 1977. Blitar is a charming town in East Java, known with its friendly people. Mostly the people in Blitar are farmers, and the rest produce traditional musical instruments like Jimbe. I come from a farmer family, I'm number 2 of total 6 siblings. I remember my childhood so fun, the kids not busy with gadgets like now, so we play traditional games outside in the yard with all kids in the neighborhoods. I also helped my parent in the farm after school and also making home made brown sugar, since we lived in a limited condition.   After graduated from a high school I worked for a shoe factory for 6 years then my uncle brought me to Bali to help selling handicrafts. That was the difficult times in my life, life felt so hard, and used to sleep on the floor with low income. But that time also I met my husband for the 1st time, he is the son of the client of my uncle shop. After married, we blessed by God with 1 son and 1 daughter. Having children makes me happy as what people say here, marriage will not complete without children, so children means everything to me. They give spirit to work hard and gaining better life.   I like cycling, sewing and cooking. I had few shops that sold different kinds of crafts, but after few months I realize this duck sculptures are unique, funny and charming. Then I only focus on this these ducks. I learned a lot about it, from production, materials, painting process, etc. People said I'm a tough woman, diligent and strong in principles. Thanks to God today I have the biggest shop in Ubud for this kind of product, even my previous boss now buying duck sculptures from me.    I'm very close with my grandmother, she told me to never sleep on day time, if you want to live in healthy and better. Because sleep on day is same as wasting your times.   I work with the help of my husband and 2 assistants that still my family, and we also have 25 workers that work in their homes. I manage them myself according to their skill and talents. The material we use is bamboo root for the body and the head from wood. We work with saw and manual simple tools. My husband does the designing part for the paintings. The root bamboo raw materials are from Java, there are not many bamboo trees in Bali and the demand for this sculptures are high. During Paddy harvest time periods, people in Java cannot provide the materials since they are busy with harvesting the farms.
