Handmade She Loves Life Sese Wood Sculpture (Ghana)

Named 'Walayo,' the Ga word meaning 'A woman who enjoys life,' this sculpture is the work of Anna Yawson. She works in African sese wood to carve the statue, and adds embossed aluminum with 'Gye Nyame' Adinkra symbol proclaiming God's omnipresence.

Story Behind the Art:
Ghana's Anna Yawson says, 'I got the opportunity to work as an art vendor and developed an interest in arts and crafts. I sketch the designs on paper, then work closely with skilled artisans as they do the carving. I love that there is no waste of wood. Every small piece of wood can be used to create small creatures. I have trained two people and provide jobs for ten artisans. My design work helps me pay for my children's education.'The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color, size and design.
