Hand-carved from a single piece of Kisii soapstone by African artisans, this angel sculpture's sleek and modern style is perfect for every decor. Each piece has gone through multiple stages of sanding and waxing, giving the soapstone a satiny finish. Soapstone is a soft, natural mineral from the earth, making it easy to carve into many forms. Handle with care to avoid breakage. Each sculpture is artfully hand-carved from a single piece of Kisii soapstone, found only in the hills of southwestern Kenya. Mining the soapstone from surface hills is a labor-intensive process, using little to no machinery. Laborers works with shovels, picks, axes and machetes to carve out large soapstone chucks, which are then carved into beautiful art. ​

Story Behind the Art:
The artisans of Kenya represent a talented group who live in rural Kenya in the region called Kisii, well-known for soapstone crafts. SMOLart is named for "Small, Medium, Large" to reference the size of the sculptures that are lovingly crafted by hand from locally mined stone. The self-help organization provides member carvers with marketing and logistical support to sell their crafts while also promoting sustainability. Their work is reducing poverty through economic transformation in a country where the majority are income poor or near the poverty line.
